The amazing moment has come - you had a baby! What now caring
for your child is a skill, lucky that it can be easily acquired and learned?
Baby care and nutrition are going to be from your first few months to the
maximum, and here are some tips to help reduce stress and make parenting more
fun!
Holding talking and
touching to your new baby in the delivery room is good for you and your baby.
This is a wonderful time to start breastfeeding. Tell your
caregiver not to let anyone else feed your baby so that your baby only gets
your breast milk.
Your healthcare provider will check your baby's appearance
and color, alertness, breathing, heart rate, and activity right after birth, to
see if your baby needs any special care.
Ask your newborn to stay with you in bed. Touch and hold
your baby, and find out how your baby feels.
Your baby may look different than you expect. Ask the
hospital staff if you have any questions about how your baby looks.
Ask the staff how you take your child's temperature and read
the thermometer.
All infants should be protected from hepatitis B. Some
doctors recommend giving the first pill before going home from the hospital.
You should take your baby to see a doctor when your baby is
about 1 week old unless you are told to come early. Call your baby's doctor
immediately after your baby is born.
A few drops of blood
will be taken from your baby's heel before you and your baby leave the hospital
to check for some rare problems.
To bring your baby home you will need a car safety seat (Federally
approved). It is the law that your child must always be in an approved safety
seat when traveling in a car, van, or truck. Ask your healthcare provider at
the hospital where you deliver or the health department about programs that
approve car safety seats.
If you or the baby's father has a question about how to pick
up, hold, feed, bathe, give diapers, or dress your baby, ask the hospital staff
to help you. Your new baby needs the love and comfort you need. You can't love
a child very much. Your whole family can share in the joy of this love. Caring
for your baby at home...
Most newborns spend most of their time sleeping and eating.
You want to make sure that the baby has a safe place to sleep and is placed in
a safe position to sleep.
Slots in a secure crib will be 2 more than 3/8 inches high
and less than 5/8 inches above the corner post rail.
The baby should sleep on a sturdy mattress that fits snugly
in the crib, cradle bassinet. Do not place pillows, comfort, or other soft
cushioned material under the baby's bed.
Place healthy babies to sleep on their backs or arms. Raise
the edges of the crib when the baby is sleeping. Sleeping newborns keep away from pets, other
children, and large overstuffed toys. Don’t let people smoke around your child.
